The Concept
Rather than develop a new maps app, the concept is to integrate carbon emissions and dollar expenses into Google Maps. Noting Google Maps by far dominates the maps market.
The Impact
The first goal is to educate users on the total cost of their transportation (broadly time, money, and carbon footprint). With the ultimate goal being to, over time, persuade people to choose a greener alternative more often than they otherwise would have.

Carbon emissions and gas expenses are based on your vehicle.
Transit can be quicker, cheaper, and less hassle than driving into the city.
Driving when there is no traffic saves gas and is better for the environment.
Ride hailing emits more CO2 due to the extra passenger-free driving.
I think there is real value in people knowing the total cost of their journey, to not only consider their time but also know the financial expense and carbon emissions. I sense that for most of us it is true that we could be making more eco-friendly transportation decisions whether that be through avoiding driving in congestion, choosing to take the train, combining multiple outings into single outings, or walking the short distances.
Some are of the opinion that the climate change burden should be placed on governments and corporations. But I think we all have a role to play in climate change - and I believe that individual efforts make a difference. If this project resonates with you, please reach out!
